Robert J. Cavazos, Ph.D. Senior Economist, Aventa Group, LLC
Trained as an economist, Dr. Cavazos's primary areas of expertise are economic development and public policy. For Aventa Group, Dr. Cavazos leads all financial analysis, cost benefit analysis, statistical methods, economic analysis, project management, and is experienced in making presentations to senior management and elected officials. His book, Metropolitan Income Growth and Convergence, published by Ashgate in fall of 2001 examines the growth process of American cities from 1980-1990.
Professional Experience
Dr. Cavazos brings excellent Housing Development Experience to the team, having served as Development Manager from 1994-1998 for Maple Avenue Economic Development Corporation in Dallas, Texas. There, Dr. Cavazos was responsible for housing development for single-family homes and new apartment construction via tax exempt financing.
Dr. Cavazos also served as a consultant to Carleton Residential Properties in Dallas, Texas 1995-2000, bringing over $100 million in projects to the firm, including a tax credit project and a long term multi-project public housing project.
Presently, Dr. Cavazos serves as Vice-President for American Opportunity for Housing (AOH), a Non-profit organization (CHDO) developing housing for low-income individuals and families in Texas and Mississippi. Dr. Cavazos is directly involved in acquisition strategy of organization, having acquired over 1,200 units in the past year ($45 million via tax exempt financing) and currently undertaking expansion with planned acquisitions in New York State.
In pursuit of his advanced degrees, Dr. Cavazos has extensive Academic Experience. From 1998-2000, he served as Assistant Professor of Public Administration, Division of Social and Policy Sciences, at the University of Texas at San Antonio. There, Dr. Cavazos was responsible for teaching graduate level courses in economics, statistics, program evaluation, urban planning methods in the Master of Public Administration program, including leading contract research on economic development in inner city San Antonio.
From 1991-1994, Dr. Cavazos served as Senior Policy Analyst Office of Policy Management for the Office of the Comptroller for the City of New York. A Member of Comptroller's senior staff, Dr. Cavazos conducted policy research and had direct oversight responsibility for New York City Economic Development Corporation.
Dr. Cavazos also served as Economist for the Texas Department of Agriculture, Austin Texas, from 1988-1991 where he performed economic analysis of policy issues for the Texas Commissioner of Agriculture on issues ranging from food prices to toxic waste in Texas. There, he worked on the development of rural community economic development loan programs.
